A Cyanotype is a photograph made by treating paper, cloth with iron salts which then react to UV light. Originally used to document botanical specimens by placing them on treated papers and exposing them to the sun it is a beautiful creative process. The first ever photobook was made in 1843 using this Cyanotype process by English botanical artist, collector and photographer Anna Atkins, the book ‘Photographs of British Algae: Cyanotype Impressions’ can be viewed here in the Library and Archive’s Special Collections of the National History Museum in the UK.
You will be introduced to the cyanotype processes and equipment; then, you will learn how to prepare the chemicals, paper and exposures to produce your very own cyanotype images. You will also try wet cyanotypes and several other variations, enabling you to understand the process and its possibilities.
