Our History

  • 1978 – ‘The Gallery of Photography’ is founded by John Osman on Wellington Quay
  • 1980 – Out of the Shadows exhibition, the first major survey of Irish art photography curated by John Osman – the first time a photography exhibition in the state had received public funding.
  • 1990 – Tony O’Shea’s Dubliners book is published – solo exhibition 
  • 1991 – Pete Smyth’s ‘A View from the Dearth’ Exhibition Premieres 
  • 1993 – Duane Michals Exhibition Premieres
  • 1993 – Elliott Erwitt’s ‘Personal Exposures’ Exhibition 
  • 1996 – New Home for the Gallery of Photography in Meeting House Square, Temple Bar. Designed by O’Donnell & Tuomey Architects, the concept for the building was inspired by the Box Brownie camera.
  • 1997 – August Sander Exhibition 
  • 1998 – Martine Franck’s ‘Tory Island’ Exhibition & Book 
  • 1998 – Tanya Kiang appointed Director of Gallery of Photography 
  • 1999 – Tom Wood All Zones Off Peak Exhibition 
  • 2000 – Major retrospective of Harry Thuillier Jr 
  • 2002 – Richard Torchia transformed the Gallery of Photography into a giant, walk-in camera
  • 2007 – The National Museum and Gallery of Photography jointly presented Dignified Kings Play Chess on Fine Green Silk, a body of work by Irish photographer Karl Grimes 
  • 2008 – Eoin O’Conaill receives the Gallery of Photography’s Artist Award for his project ‘Common Place’
  • 2009 – The LightRoom opens at the newly refurbished Gallery of Photography
  • 2011 – The Long View Exhibition and Publication Launches 
  • 2012 – ​​World premiere of the acclaimed ‘Amazon’ series by Sebastião Salgado
  • 2012 – Premiere of ‘THE MARKET’ by Mark Curran
  • 2014 – Tanya Kiang appointed CEO and Artistic Co-Director with Trish Lambe
  • 2014 – Photo Album of the Irish launched
  • 2017 – Irish Premiere Exhibition of Krass Clement’s Drum and Dublin Work
  • 2020 – National Photography Collection is established
  • 2022 – Gallery of Photography Ireland becomes Photo Museum Ireland
  • 2022 – Patricia Lambe appointed CEO of Photo Museum Ireland
  • 2022 – Launch of landmark centenary photographic exhibition In Our Own Image: Photography in Ireland: 1839 to the Present, the first comprehensive survey of photography in Ireland. 
  • 2022 – Launch of interactive Timeline of the History of Photography 
  • 2022 – The Light of Day – major retrospective exhibition by Tony O’Shea is launched
