Photo Museum Ireland is proud to announce that landmark exhibition The Memories of Others by Akihiko Okamura is touring to Ulster Museum this summer.

This major international project was developed and premiered by Photo Museum Ireland in close collaboration with the Okamura Estate and expert international curators. As lead partner, we undertook the first professional digitisation of Okamura’s previously unseen Irish archive, preserving an extraordinary visual record of the Troubles from a rare and deeply personal perspective.

The exhibition, photobook, and accompanying documentary mark the first in-depth exploration of Okamura’s Irish work. His poetic, colour-rich photographs — made between the 1960s and 1980s — offer a quiet, empathetic counterpoint to the dominant imagery of conflict.

The touring of The Memories of Others extends the legacy of this vital project and brings Okamura’s powerful vision to new audiences across the island of Ireland.

Open from Friday 13 June in Art Gallery 4, Ulster Museum.
