Photo Museum Ireland’s Afterimage: Photography in the Digital Age brings together Irish and international artists exploring the material and conceptual transformations that have altered our sense of what a photograph is and can be. Afterimage focuses on the creative possibilities of new technology and its application to photography within hybrid practices embracing diverse visual media. The artists recognise that the digital revolution has made the photograph infinitely malleable, connecting it with painting, sculpture, gaming, online archives, and social media. In an image-saturated culture, data has become another aesthetic resource. The works chart the diverse ways a photographic image can now exist, showing photography’s instability and its crisis under digital media, which disconnects images from context and meaning.
