As part of our public programme for the exhibition Skin / Deep: Perspectives on the Body, join us for an in-depth talk with featured artist Shia Conlon. Shia will discuss the background to his practice, his inspirations and the evolution of his work included in the exhibition.
About the artist: Born in 1990 in Ireland, lives and works in Helsinki. Writer and artist whose work has been centred around marginalised voices and growing up in the landscape of working-class Catholic Ireland. His current research is focused on non-linear time and how to use the power of archives, language, and memory as tools for queer representation. His work is rooted in collaboration and would not exist without the vulnerability of his queer and trans community. He is 1/3 of Almanac Press, a trans-run and centred mutual aid initiative, and co-founder of Trans Library Helsinki.
About the exhibition: Skin / Deep brings together challenging artistic perspectives on the body in contemporary Irish photography and lens-based media. The featured artists take an expanded view of the social, psychological, and material realities of embodiment – of being a ‘body’ in the world. Through their individual practices, they call into question many fundamental assumptions about how gender, sexuality, and selfhood are manifested in and through the body.
