Museum Standards of Ireland Programme Accreditation
Photo Museum Ireland is the first dedicated contemporary photography institution in Ireland to achieve full museum accreditation.
This milestone recognises our commitment to the highest standards in collections care, public engagement, and organisational excellence, strengthening our role as Ireland’s leading centre for contemporary photography.
The Museum Standards Programme of Ireland (MSPI) is the national benchmark for excellence in museum practice, administered by the Heritage Council.
MSPI accreditation reflects how we care for photography, support artists, and make contemporary visual culture accessible to audiences across Ireland and beyond. This affirms our role as a trusted steward of Ireland’s contemporary photographic heritage.
Museum accreditation is a landmark moment for Photo Museum Ireland. The culmination of years of dedicated work by our team and board, past and present, it is a profound validation of our commitment to Irish photography. We are grateful to the MSPI team and the Heritage Council for their invaluable support throughout this process.
The Collection
Established in 2021, the Photo Museum Ireland Collection is a growing national resource dedicated to safeguarding the future of contemporary photography in Ireland.
Comprising more than 400 works by 60 artists across emerging, established, and internationally recognised practices, the collection supports artists’ legacies, preserves important photographic archives, and ensures this work remains accessible to future generations.
The collection currently holds approximately 400 works by 60 artists at various stages of their careers. As it grows, the collection will evolve into a national resource, safeguarding important Irish work and deepening public understanding of photography as a vital cultural form.
Photo Museum Ireland’s accreditation under the Museum Standards Programme for Ireland is a significant milestone, recognising the care, professionalism and ambition at the heart of the organisation. As a leading centre for contemporary photography, the museum is making an important contribution to Ireland’s cultural landscape. The MSPI exists to support museums in demonstrating these standards and sharing their work with the public.
The Accreditation Process
Achieving full accreditation through the Museum Standards Programme of Ireland (MSPI) requires a rigorous, multi-year process assessing how a museum is managed, how its collection is cared for, and how it serves the public.
This involves developing and implementing robust policies, refining procedures, and meeting national standards in how we care for, interpret, and make photography accessible. Accreditation confirms that the museum operates to best practice—ensuring the long-term preservation of the collection while supporting meaningful public access and engagement.
Photo Museum Ireland was evaluated across core areas including:
- Management & Governance – Ensuring strong leadership, clear policies, and long-term organisational sustainability.
- Care of Collections – Preserving and protecting artworks to the highest conservation standards.
- Documentation of Collections – Maintaining accurate records and systems to manage and track the collection.
- Access – Making the collection accessible to the public—physically, digitally, and intellectually.
- Education & Learning – Delivering programmes and resources that support public understanding and engagement.
- Exhibitions – Presenting and interpreting work to a high standard for diverse audiences.
- Public Engagement – Connecting with audiences and communities in meaningful and inclusive ways.
Accreditation strengthens the foundations that underpin Photo Museum Ireland’s long-term strategy and supports our mission to advance photography as a vital cultural form.
As Ireland’s leading centre for contemporary photography, we support artists at every stage of their careers through residencies, commissions, exhibitions, professional development, and opportunities to connect with new audiences. Accreditation reinforces our ability to continue this work while ensuring it is delivered to the highest professional standards.
It also strengthens our capacity to develop and care for a nationally significant collection of contemporary photography. Through the collection, we safeguard artists’ legacies, make important photographic archives accessible for research, and ensure that the work being created today remains available to future generations.
Most importantly, accreditation supports our commitment to public access. Through exhibitions, education programmes, workshops, events, and digital initiatives, we continue to connect artists and audiences while advancing the profile of Irish photography nationally and internationally.
Accreditation under the MPSI is a significant event for Photo Museum Ireland. We welcome the high standards contained in the programme obligations as they make us a stronger organisation and enable us to grow and develop as the national centre for photography in Ireland. Congratulations to all of our team who were involved in achieving this accreditation.
