Project Statement:

My Beloved Solitude

My Beloved Solitude is a contemplative series of reflective imagery exploring my desire to seek sanctuary through the act of solitude and the joy I take from being alone. I use photography to look deeper into the anthropological conditions of self and how I relate to my environment. What is it that drives us to seek solace in our own thoughts? Why am I driven to seek my own company? For such a social animal we tend to create works of art, literature and poetry which explore these aspects of the human condition and often celebrate them.

My images are made in forested areas, local to me. I make a point of straying off the beaten pathways, the desire lines and open areas and explore as deep into the trees as I can. I use light to represent the found point of sanctuary, the place where I feel truly alone and content.

ARTIST BIO:

Born in Dungannon in 1977, Dominic McNamee is a multidisciplinary artist. He uses Photography, video and sound in his personal practice. Dominic uses photography to explore memory and place, he uses sound to both reinforce and often alter the visual narrative. His work explores the social and anthropological conditions of the self and how we relate to our environment through personal and shared experience utilising traditional photographic practices as well as a pseudo-forensic approach. He endeavours through his work to start a conversation and engage with an audience to evoke similar feelings and emotions to those that he experiences when he looks at the work of others. He uses both digital and film media, family archive and ephemera, found sounds and field recordings to make connections with his past and present.
