Photo Museum Ireland is delighted to present the two overall winners and the twenty category winners for our 2024 Young Photographer of the Year Awards.

The Young Photographer of the Year Awards celebrate the creative talent of the next generation of visual storytellers. Now in its fourth year, this nationwide competition is free to enter and is open to anyone between the ages of 8 and 18.

Ava Tynan, age 18, Galway

Uniquely, the Awards are designed by young people, for young people. The entries are judged by Photo Museum Ireland’s Student Council, which includes Transition Year students and previous Young Photographer Award winners. In June of this year, the Jury had the difficult job of selecting the 20 finalists from over 1000 superb photographs submitted by talented young artists from all over Ireland.

The Jury were tasked with selecting winners in categories including Landscape, Portrait, Conceptual and Nature photography. They looked for images that reflect the unique vision and creativity of the photographer, particularly those that give fresh insights into the diverse experiences of young people in Ireland today.

Zoë Haslam, age 14, Dublin

It did not matter if the photograph was taken with a mobile phone or with an analog or digital camera. What mattered was the way the young artists used the camera - the most powerful and democratic visual medium of our time.

From breathtaking landscapes to intimate portraits, from gritty urban scenes to the wonders of nature, the photographs displayed here challenge old habits of seeing. They inspire curiosity; they celebrate the beauty of everyday moments; they show us new worlds – worlds created by young photographers, one frame at a time.
