Inspired by exhibiting photographer Shane Lynam’s project Pebbledash Wonderland, this artist-led workshop invites you to explore the intricate layers of Dublin’s urban landscape. Under Lynam’s guidance, participants will uncover how to create a lived portrait of a place and learn strategies to develop their own observational style, This masterclass challenges participants to engage with the city as a dynamic subject, crafting a narrative that captures the evolving character of Dublin 8.

Using their own digital cameras, participants will look deeper into the historical narrative of an area, uncovering the subtle details and exploring juxtapositions that create new possibilities for our understanding of place and good photography. Through a blend of walking and picture-making participants will discover Dublin’s urban landscape and reflect on developments that are continuously changing the experience of the city. Resulting in a collection of compelling images that document the concept of ‘progress.’

  • Learn how to actively engage with a place, responding to your chosen environment. 

  • Develop strategies for evolving your own personal practice in photography.

Masterclass Schedule

  • Shane presents strategies for developing work based on his experiences around Fifty High Seasons and Pebbledash Wonderland. 

  • Guided walk through the inner city with visits to specific sites relevant to Pebbledash Wonderland, finishing in Dublin 8.

  • Optional informal coffee chat. 

    Opportunity to share work with Shane by email after the event.

Artist Biography:

Shane Lynam (b. 1980) is an Irish photographer based in Dublin. His work is a sustained exploration of the multi-layered ways the built environment shapes the lived experience of those who dwell there. Lynam’s first book, Fifty High Seasons, was published in 2018. He is represented by Galerie Bertrand Grimont in Paris who presented his work at Paris Photo in 2019. Shane was awarded the Visual Arts Bursary Award in 2022, the Curtin O’Donoghue RHA award in 2018, The Gallery of Photography Solas award in 2015 and selected for a residency at the Irish Cultural Centre Paris in 2019. He has been an Artist-in-Residence for 18 months at Photo Museum Ireland - as part of their artist’s art form development programmes. This has supported the development of this work for exhibition and book publication. His work is held in Photo Museum Ireland’s Collection.Alongside working on personal projects, Shane lectures at TU Dublin and Griffith College Dublin.
