Collage & Zine making workshop:
Join artist and Zine maker Katja McMillan for an immersive workshop merging the analogue practice of collage with digital design skills, where you’ll create your own collages and transform them into zines on Adobe InDesign. This workshop is designed to unlock key design skills for anyone interested in learning design, creating their own visual publications, or learning the art of collage. Start the day with a blank page, be inspired by the magazine materials provided to reinterpret a new visual world between the pages of your very own Zine.
What you will learn:
Adobe InDesign Basics: Adobe InDesign can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be! Learn the technical ins and outs of this design tool.
Principles of Collage: Collage is an accessible medium for all levels of artistic ability, but there are some tips and tricks which will help you create even better collages.
Recycling: Turning ‘waste’ into art by recognizing its potential.
Composition & Design: Until you take out the glue, collage is a dynamic medium that helps you put into practice theories of composition and design.
Guided Practice: You’ll get the opportunity to put universal design principles into practice tailored to your own personal artistic style.
Zine making: Make your own zine to take home using both Adobe InDesign and more traditional zine methods.
By the end of the day, you will have co-published a zine of visually interesting collages you’ll be proud to share. You’ll receive both a hard copy and a PDF copy for you to print out and share as many times as you like. You’ll have a greater understanding of how to make eye-catching and visually interesting designs using both analogue and digital methods. You will feel comfortable using Adobe InDesign for other projects. Finally, you might be inspired to create something new out of all those old magazines you might have lying around!
Key Learning Outcomes:
Master theories of design and composition.
Proficiency in using Adobe InDesign to create page layouts.
Expert tips on how to create visually interesting designs.
Develop your own zine you can print and share.
Embrace the ways in which the collage medium can open up new creative pathways.

Katja McMillan – tutor
About Katja McMillan
Katja McMillan is a recent TCD graduate of the Identities and Cultures of Europe MPhil programme. Since January, she has collaborated with the Photo Museum Ireland as one of the designers for the Photo Album of the Irish book.
Katja’s photographic practice goes as far back as when she was a teenager, when she shot several campaigns for a local skateboarding brand as well as professional portraits for secondary school and university graduates. Since then, she has directed and participated in photoshoots for several student and independent publications, as well as directed and edited a short film for a small multilingual publishing company.
Katja has been creating collages as long as she has been practicing photography. Collage has allowed her to transform her own photographs from the real to the surreal and create new absurd ways of seeing. These collages are often made with discarded material found at charity shops and estate sales, a commentary on how the disposability mindset of contemporary society can be recycled into art. Katja is looking forward to combining her love for the art of collage with her experience using Adobe InDesign.
Showcasing Creative Photography from our courses
To mark the creative success and share the enjoyment of the learning experience, a selection of photographic work from course participants will be displayed on Photo Museum Ireland’s recently launched Flickr platform.
By taking part in our workshops you are invited to participate with one image from your workshop experience. We will email you after the workshop with an image request. You can view the album at any time to see recent participants’ work.
