Agnes and Ellen Clerke grew up in Skibbereen during the Famine. Entirely educated at home, they moved as young adults to Dublin, then Italy and finally settled in London. Agnes started writing her History of Astronomy when she was 15 - it was published to enormous acclaim in 1885. She became the foremost science writer of her day and a crater on the moon is named after her. Ellen, although she too studied astronomy, developed a career writing, in several languages, about literary and social issues.

Clerke Crater

This crater on the moon was named after Irish Astronomy Writer Agnes Clerke
